Emergency Department

For residents assigned to the Emergency Department track, the program is based on the ENA: EMERGENCY NURSING ORIENTATION 3.0 Core Curriculum. Many of the division and/or facility-specific training initiatives will be incorporated as well. Depending on the HCA Division, StaRN Residents will earn the following certifications based on the HCA Division Job Description Requirements: ARC – BLS & ALS, AHA – PALS, ENPC, TNCC, NIH Stroke Scale, and CPI – Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Foundation Certification. Residents will also be introduced and trained on the facility’s Electronic Health Record by HealthTrust Workforce Solutions and / or the facility education team.

Residents will transition to the facility’s payroll following successful completion of the 14-week StaRN program. Residents that will be employed by a facility, represented by a collective bargaining agreement will transition to facility payroll at the successful completion of the didactic phase. (Residents who are already facility/internal employees at the start of the program will remain on the facility’s payroll.)

The program runs for approximately 14 weeks with 4 or more residents. The first seven (7) weeks include a combination of didactic education and skills, eLearning, facility days, and simulation. The remaining seven (7) weeks are spent at the sponsoring facility working with a clinical preceptor from the hiring facility.

For ED cohorts with 1–3 residents, program adjustments will be made that will impact the program length and certifications received:

• 1–3 Residents
  • Program Length = 14 Weeks
  • Didactic – 5 Weeks
  • Clinical Preceptorship – 9 Weeks
  • PALS / ENPC / TNCC certifications will not be included

Residents hired by HealthTrust Workforce Solutions will be on HealthTrust’s payroll for the duration of training. At the time of completion, the Residents will be transferred to the facility’s payroll. Internal residents’ hours remain with the facility.

Yes. Residents are paid an hourly wage during the program. Residents are categorized as non-exempt, temporary HealthTrust employees during the program and are not eligible for shift or weekend differentials.

All Residents are required to attend every didactic / facility / simulation day and scheduled days in preceptorship. All residents are expected to come to class prepared with a laptop, stethoscope, dressed appropriately, and with a professional, engaged, and courteous attitude at all times.

The hiring manager at the facility selects the Preceptors.

• Didactic / skills classroom instruction will be held at a centrally agreed upon location (facility training room, hotel or college classroom).

• Simulation is typically held at the sponsoring facility in a closed unit or adjacent office building or partner with local simulation center in the market (usually physician training center).

• Facility days will be held at the sponsoring facility for each resident.

The sourcing and recruiting of candidates will be the responsibility of the facility and recruitment team. Once interviewed and selected, HealthTrust will begin the onboarding process to include a background screen and license verification. The facility is responsible for completing a Drug Test and Health Screening for each candidate. Once completed, the facility will provide an attestation for the Health Screening and Drug test to HealthTrust. (The facility will complete all onboarding activities for Residents who are already facility/internal employees before the start of the program.)

Depending on the market, some participating nurses make a two-year commitment to work at the sponsoring hospital. Residents may be obligated to repay a pro-rated portion of the educational costs should they break that commitment.
